  1. Chapter 21 – Types of Reactions 21.1 – Classifying Reactions • Recognizing the types of reactions will allow you to predict the products. • There five types of chemical reactions: Addition, decomposition, single displacement, double displacement, combustion.

  2. Addition(Synthesis) Rxn: two or more substances combine to form a new compound. • Ex: Rust • A + B AB

  3. Decomposition Rxn: single compound is broken down to produce two or more smaller compounds. • AB A + B

  4. Single Displacement Rxn: one element replaces a similar element in a compound. • AX + B BX + A http://www.harpercollege.edu/tm-ps/chm/100/dgodambe/thedisk/chemrxn/signs.htm

  5. Double Displacement Rxn: ions from two compounds in solution exchange places to produce two new compounds. • AB + CD AD + CB http://staff.norman.k12.ok.us/~cyohn/index_files/ddlab.htm

  6. Combustion Rxn: A substance such as wood, natural gas, or propane combines with oxygen, releasing a large amount of energy in the form of light and heat. • Carbon Cmpd + O2 CO2 + H2O http://www.elcosh.org/en/document/494/d000485/confined-space-entry-permits.html

  7. 21.2 – Energy in Reactions • Exothermic reactions is a reaction that gives off heat. • Ex: Combustion of gas in engines, Heat packs and MRE http://datafortress2020.110mb.com/conflict/800px-MRE_contents.jpg

  8. Endothermic reaction is a reaction that absorbs heat, and gets cold. • Ex: Cold Pack, Refining ores to make metal http://jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/JCESoft/CCA/CCA3/MAIN/ENDO2/PAGE1.HTM
