Pythagoras - mathematician569-475 BC Pythagoras was a mathematician. He lived in ancient Greece 2500 years ago. We still use some of his ideas to measure shapes, like triangles. Pythagoras was a disabled man. His impairment was epilepsy. This led to him often having fainting episodes.
Ludwig van BeethovenComposer 1770-1827 Ludwig van Beethoven was a world famous musical composer who wrote some of his most important music when he was deaf. He started going deaf when he was in his twenties. Beethoven’s form of deafness wasn’t a silent world, as he continued to hear constant shirring and whistling sounds.
Louis Braille1809-1852 Louis Braille became blind in both eyes when he was a young child. He invented a Braille machine which uses raised dots for the alphabet. It is a way that people can read using their fingers and not their eyes. Braille is still used today.
Albert EinsteinScientist 1879-1955 Albert Einstein is considered to be one of the greatest scientists the world has ever known. He was a genius in maths and physics. Einstein had dyslexia and did not think in the same way as other people. Einstein thought in pictures. His thinking is still the basis for modern science and our understanding of the universe.
Dame Evelyn Glennie Percussionist 1966 - Evelyn lost her hearing while she was still at school but continued to learn and to play music. She had to learn to feel the vibrations of musical sound through her body. Evelyn is known all over the world as a great musician. She performs in bare feet to help her to feel the vibrations through the floor.

He now knows that he is dyslexic. Although he didn’t get an education at school he made sure that he educated himself. He is now one of the UK’s best known poets. He has had a number of books published, and is also a musician.
Alison Lapper, artist (1965 -) Alison is also a campaigner for equality for disabled people. A sculpture of her was used as part of the Paralympic opening ceremony. Alison was born without arms so she holds a paintbrush in her mouth to create her paintings.
Ade Adepitan has won a Gold medal in the Paralympics. He has starred in a number of TV programmes. He is now a TV presenter. Ade Adepitan 1972 - Ade Adepitan was born in Nigeria. He came to live in Britain when he was 3 years old. He contracted a virus called Polio when he was a baby and is unable to use his left leg and only has partial use of his right leg. Ade Adepitan uses a wheelchair.
