Mission and scope • To develop and reinforce existing disciplinary research strengths in medicine, health and the well-being of people and places. • Foster interdisciplinary research on human health and wellbeing at local, national and international levels • Contribute significantly to the development of Queen’s Campus at Stockton. • Improve health and wellbeing in the North East, especially County Durham and the Tees Valley, through local partnerships.

2008-9 Financial Overview • £6.2m of successful applications supported, funded by the NIHR, the NHS, the Wellcome Trust and the North East Improvement and Efficiency Partnership • £1.2m from the NHS awarded to Durham in support of research linked with the new phase 1 medicine programme, supporting posts in Anthropology, Health and Medicine, Geography, and Applied Social Sciences • £5m Centre for Translational Research in Public Health co-directed by Professor David Hunter • £4.8m Research Design Service co-directed by Professor Mason • £4.5m portfolio of grant applications under development or submitted
Fellowship • Fellowship aims to create a research community that subscribes to the Institute's aims and has the opportunity to share in its activities, resources, support and collective reputation. • There are currently 120 Fellows from 14 departments. • Fellows are entitled to receive support such as funding for pilot projects and symposia, research facilities or staff time to assist with grant applications and events. • Fellowship is also open to accomplished academics and professionals external to the University.
