  4. Flatworms • Simplest animals with bilateral symmetry • In addition to the endoderm and ectoderm, they have a mesoderm • Increasing complexity • Single opening (like cnidarians) • The anterior end has a primitive brain and sensory organs • Sexual/Asexual

  6. Roundworms • Salt/freshwater, soil, parasites • Body plan • 2 distinct openings • Regional specialization • Food intake, digestion, absorption, excretion • “Tube within a tube” • Support for organs • Resistance for muscles • Reproduction • sexual

  7. The rest of animals • Have coelom (a body cavty that forms within the mesoderm) • organ protection • Fluid of coelom keeps the organs moist

  8. Segmented Worms • Earthworms • True coelom • Most segments contain the same internal structures • Complex digestive tract • Esophagus, intestine, anus • Gas exchange through skin • Primitive nervous system • Separate sexes, but also hermaphroditic
