History of Tires • The earliest tires were bands of iron (later steel), placed on wooden wheels, used on carts and wagons.
History of Tires • The first practical pneumatic tire was made by John Boyd Dunlop, in 1887 for his son's bicycle.
Tire Construction • Tire construction starts when raw chemical additives such as sulfur, carbon black and solvents are combined with natural and synthetic rubber. • The process takes place in a large machine called a Banbury mixer.
Two Main Types of Tires • Bias Belted Tires • Have crossed layers of ply cord running diagonally (60 Deg) to the tread. • Radial Belted Tires • Radial tires have the ply cords radiate at a 90-degree angle from the bead cord
Bias Ply • Old Technology • Main advantage of bias-ply tires is in its load-carrying capabilities in relation to tire size. • A smaller bias-ply tire can carry more load than a radial tire of similar size. • A major drawback is higher friction, which creates higher tire temperatures and results in faster wear.
Radial Tire • The casing is strengthened by a belt of steel fabric that runs around the circumference of the tire. • In radial tire design, the ply cords are made of nylon, rayon, or polyester.
