History • A century ago, Goodyear built the first aircraft tire. It was beginning of greater things to come. Goodyear would be the first tire company to invent an aircraft tire testing machine to help produce consistently high quality tires.
Bias ply Aircraft Tire Construction • Bias aircraft tires feature a casing of alternating layers of rubber coated ply cords which extend around the beads and are substantially less than 90 degree to the center line of the tread. • Rubber tread is molded over the casings.
Radial Ply Aircraft Tire Construction • Radial aircraft tires feature a flexible casing which is constructed of rubber coated ply cords that extend around the beads and are ~90 degree to the centerline of the tread. • The casing is stabilized by an essentially inextensible circumferential belt.
Aircraft Tire Terminology • The term” ply rating” is use to indicated index to the load rating of the tire. Years ago when tire were made from cotton cords, “ply rating” did indicate the actual number of plies in the carcass. With the development of higher-strength fiber such as nylon, fewer plies are need to give and equivalent strength
Shearography inspection Goodyear uses shearograph equipment as part of its state-of –the art nondestructive inspection methods. It is a capable of detecting very small anomalies that could affect tire performance.
