Introducing ERIM and the Impact strategy • Characteristics ERIM Doctoral Programme • ERIM Innovation 2009: towards student driven trajectories • Key elements of the 2009 initiative • Bringing top research and doctoral education in a viable relationship • Networking modes Menu
Erasmus Research Institute of Management - ERIM • Unites the researchers in Management of the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) & the Erasmus School of Economics (ESE) since 1998 • People: a community of over 300 researchers at Erasmus • 190 Fellows/Members (70% RSM, 30% ESE) • 100 PhD students (65% international) • 30 MPhil students (80% international) • Largest Doctoral Programme in Management in Europe • Research Institute and Graduate School (Mphil + PhD) in one integrated organization • Strong focus on the academic career of ERIM members
ERIM = Maturing into a leading research institute in Research in Management • Output & citation impact (bibliometric studies, 1999-2006) • Top 3 in Europe (with LBS and INSEAD) • Top 25 World-wide • Wharton School (U Penn), Stanford, Harvard, NYU, Columbia, Duke, MIT, UCLA, … • ERIM Research Programmes: 5 domains • Business Processes, Logistics and Information Systems • Organization • Marketing • Finance & Accounting • Strategy • ERIM Doctoral Programme: Matches structure and mission of the research programmes
Actively stimulating quality research by a straightforward incentive system: • 0,4 voucher for regular members • 0,6 voucher for high performing members For regular membership: 5 publications in 5 years (of which at least 1 in a P or P* Journal (= Core Top)) See: ERIM Journal List (EJL) for ranking of journals into P*, P and S journals (www.erim.eur.nl/ejl) ERIM = about performance incentives
Intermezzo: How do we monitor the ERIM impact strategy?
Output & Impact ERIM and 20 benchmark institutions (nucleus set of 80 core ISI journals) (1999-2006)(CWTS) Citation Impact World Average
Output & Impact ERIM and 20 benchmark Institutions (resulting from international cooperation) (Nucleus set Jnls) Citation Impact World Average
Impact Strategy: Co-authoring yields higher academic impact(Tapping into citation networks) Conclusion: Stimulate Co-Authoring with international Co-Authors in top journals (P*, P) Currently: 40% of our P*& P articles are internationally co-authored Important: Continuous reflection and dialog among members on the publishing strategy: Asking: Are you collaborating with the right co-authors?
Combining the Impact Strategy for Research and the ERIM Doctoral programme And here comes the essential link; Bringing the doctoral students as close as possible to the publishing and citation network dynamics
ERIM = Quality Doctoral Programme Main characteristics: • Highly selective, tested, multiple entries (Honours, MPhil, PhD) • Full & Coherent advanced course programme modeled to that of Top Business schools • Research Methodology (quantitative modeling, experimental design, case study research, survey design, …) • Skills training (writing, publishing, presenting, … ) • Substantive courses per field • Tailor made, nurturing variety • Participation in internationally active research community (for example, 180 research seminars in 2008; 90% outside speakers) • Benefiting from excellent research infrastructure & effectively organized research support programme • Annual output: 35-40 PhD theses published in the ERIM PhD Series in Research in Management
ERIM mode 2: Key elements • Selection phase: • Profile candidate: ‘brilliant’, ‘original’, ‘ambitious’ • Review of candidate’s submitted research proposal • Presentation & interview round • Prospective research groups / supervisors selected • First year: • Nominate Personal Mentor for candidate ( ≠ supervisor) • Deliberate rotation between research groups / supervisors • Tailor made course programme • Developing full blown research proposal • End of first year: Go/No Go decision • Second & Third year: • Conducting research with team of supervisors • Research stay in our co-authoring network at top business school (3-9 months) • Fourth year • Papers submitted to leading journals • On the job market; coaching for top placement
ERIM model: transformation of learning modes Knowing >> Experiencing >> Doing
ERIM model: transformation of networking dynamics: from doctoral student to early career researcher Study method 1: Learning by knowing (Evaluation by written exams & assignments) Study method 2: Learning by experiencing (Evaluation by written exams & peer feedback) Study method 3: Learning by doing & publishing (Evaluation by peer feedback & peer review) Network mode 1: Courses & Socializing Network contexts: EIASM / EDAMBA Network mode 2: Projects & Skills Network contexts: EU / CASES / GAMES Network mode 3: Writings, Discussions (Co)-Authoring Network context: Conferences, Associations
Practical challenge for the ERIM doctoral programme Facilitate the transformation process from promising young academic talents towards independent early career researchers and accommodate the complementary developing networking needs of the doctoral studentswhen moving from ‘network mode 1’ towards ‘network mode 3’
