  4. Industrial Model of Leadership • Person(s) at the top • Exceptional qualities and abilities • Goal achiever • Motivate others to accomplish goals • Controller of outcomes • Replacement of the individual needs

  5. Leadership defined • All about the leader • Drive • Motivation • Honesty • Integrity • Self-confidence • Cognitive ability

  6. Conventional Thinking • Self-help books • Pop management books • It’s all about influencing people to do things that the leader or organizational representative wishes • Socialize and orient members in the ways of institutional needs

  7. A Different Approach • What motivates people to modify their self-interest to work collectively toward common goals? • Leadership is a process not a function of someone being in charge or in control • Leadership is a function of individual wills, needs, and values and the result of the dynamics of collective will organized to meet those various needs and values • If there is no need for change there is no need for leadership

  8. So how is this different? • Leadership is not about authority or structure. • Leadership is not about managing the context or situation or even people as an obstacle to be overcome. • Leadership is a process of unfolding change where the values of the individuals are integrated into the mores of the community
