THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO (DRC) • 1.3 million children suffer from acute malnutrition • 1,200 people are dying each day from ‘conflict related causes’ including hunger and violence • Life expectancy – 46 years
AIMS OF THE RESOURCE • Help modern languages embed global citizenship themes in the classroom • Young people in Scotland understand the importance of language and communication in our globalised world • Encourage young people to learn French • Raise awareness of life for people in the DRC • Promote a better understanding of the reasons for the arrival of Congolese refugees in the UK

Structured lesson ideas • Promote discussion and thinking about global citizenship issues and the role of young people as agents of change. • Lessons & activities are designed to enable young people to develop skills including: • co-operation, persuasion, voicing an opinion, negotiating, listening and critical thinking.

AIMS OF THE RESOURCE • To celebrate the life of Oscar Romero by learning about his motivations, life, death, and continuing inspiration for people around the world. • To explore global citizenship and develop a deeper understanding of our responsibility for our brothers and sisters around the world. • To raise awareness about life in El Salvador and help pupils better understand SCIAF’s work. • To support the implementation of A Curriculum for Excellence guidelines for RE and Modern Languages.
