Conceptual Activity • Where do our products come from? • Sample: • Design a chart: on one side list 10 things in your bed room. On the other write what they are made from. • Challenge: What are things recycled from? http://www.metrokc.gov/dnr/kidsweb/school_office.htm Apple Tree Apple Pie Wood Pencil & Paper
Interactive • Read the information on http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/world/minerals.html • Dividing into groups, research one of the following minerals: • Coal • Copper • Iron • Diamond • Crude oil and natural gas • Potassium • Other minerals can be used if desired. • See next slide for instructions~
Interactive continued • Using encyclopedias or the Internet, locate where reserves for each mineral can be found in the world. • Mark these areas on a world map. • What is the mineral is used for, and what country uses the mineral the most? • Try to find out how long known reserves are expected to last. Each group will report their findings.
Critical Thinking • As a whole group, discuss what would happen if a particular mineral was no longer available. • Would the location of a particular mineral affect the availability of this mineral in the United States? (Example: we import most of our oil from Iran, what would we do if we went to war with them?) • What could we do to prepare for this need? • How could we avoid this situation?
