Module 7:Nucleic Acids and Proteins 7.3 Transcription
7.3.1 State that transcription is carried out in a 5' → 3' direction. 7.3.2 Distinguish between the sense and antisense strands of DNA.
7.3.3 Explain the process of transcription in prokaryotes, including the role of the promoter region, RNA polymerase, nucleoside triphosphates and the terminator.
Progress Check If the mRNA sequence is AUCCCGAACG, what is the sequence of the antisense strand?
7.3.3 Explain the process of transcription in prokaryotes, including the role of the promoter region, RNA polymerase, nucleoside triphosphates and the terminator. • RNA polymerase binds to promoter on DNA • DNA is unwound • Nucleoside triphosphates (NTPs) bind to the antisense (template) strand • This occurs in 5’ 3’ direction using complimentary base pairing (adenine binds to uracil and cytosine binds to guanine) • New bonds are formed by the loss of two phosphates from the nucleoside triphosphate (NTPs) • This stops once the terminator signal is reached • RNA detaches and DNA rewinds • RNA polymerase detaches from DNA
7.3.4 State that eukaryotic RNA needs the removal of introns to form mature mRNA. • Pre-mRNA vs. mature mRNA
