A Power Aware Technique to Manage Real-Time Database Transactions in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks Le Gruenwald, PI Mohammed Atiquzzaman, Co-PI NSF Grant No: IIS-0312746 The University of Oklahoma Research Objective To develop and prototype a transaction management technique for a Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET) multi database management system that takes energy restriction, mobility and transaction real-time constraints into consideration. • Significant Results • Evaluated seven MANET database architectures and identified three for • prototype. • Designed the transaction submission, processing and result delivery • protocols for the decentralized MANET database architecture. • Designed a caching model (GMANET) for group-based MANET that • enables many transactions to meet their deadlines. • Designed a data replication technique that is power aware, network • partition aware and real-time aware. • Implemented the first version of the prototype (Server software: • MySQL, Linux; Client software: DALP, Win CE; Location: GPS). • Research Approach • Investigating various MANET database system architectures. • Developing a real-time MANET scheduler based on deadline and mobile host disconnection to schedule real-time • transactions. • Incorporating the energy modes of mobile hosts (Active, • Doze, and Sleep) and transaction types (Firm and Soft real- • time) into the protocols for transaction submission, • processing, result delivery, caching, replication, commit and • concurrency control. • Constructing a prototype using open source database and • network software and laptop and PDA hardware to validate • the research results. • Using real-world applications (fire fighting, military and • virtual classrooms) for testing.
