Writing Collection Process • Within your team discuss requirements of the collection • You guys are great at collaborating and have worked this all out! • Authentic writing all students will do as part of grade level writing instruction • Samples should be a logical outgrowth of ongoing writing instruction, writer’s workshop practice, and writing in content areas.
Tips for Good Writing Collections • Writing opportunities should reflect adequate writing time and effort by student (can be done during writer’s workshop time) • Tasks should allow them to show the English they know • Tasks should also allow students to stretch, use abstract language, defend a point of view, or explain a complex process • Page 27 TELPAS Rater Manual
Papers Not to Include • Any sample before February 1st • Papers with language copied from textbook or other written source • Papers showing teacher corrections • Papers revised or edited by peers or teachers • Manual page 28

K - 1 • Pay careful attention to PLDs for accurate rating • Begin with those whose English language proficiency levels are clearest to you. • What is the student’s ability to use English to participate in grade level learning? • The proficiency rating you designate should represent the level at which the student performs most consistently. • Remember, a student does not need to have high academic achievement to have an advanced high level of English language proficiency
Grades 2-5 • Use PLDs (page 39-43) • Rate three domains: listening, speaking, and writing • Reading will be assessed when students take TELPAS Reading • Record the 3 domain ratings for each student to STUDENT RATING ROSTER and turn in along with Writing Collection on March 31st
