Definition: • According to Abnormal Psychology 7th Edition by Ronald J. Comer, “people with generalized anxiety disorder experience excessive anxiety under most circumstances and worry about practically anything.” • The DSM –IV TR describes the disorder as the experience of intense anxiety, worry and apprehension that leads to behavior designed to protect the sufferer from experiencing anxiety lasting at least six months.
Physical Symptoms: • Fatigue • Muscle tension and fatigue, aches and pains • Insomnia • Gastro-intestinal complications (upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea) • Headaches, hot flashes, sweating • Difficulties swallowing, twitches, trembling • Jumpiness or unsteadiness
Psychological Symptoms: • Irritability • Feelings of dread • Inability to control anxious thoughts • Inability to relax • Difficulty concentrating/absent minded • Fear of losing control or of rejection
