IEEE • To set the stage, IEEE is a worldwide professional membership organization: + 375,000 members • 160 countries • 80,000 student members  • 10 geographic regions (IEEE-USA comprises 6 and +225,000 members) 45 technical societies & councils • wide range of technical interests ~1,300 standards & projects under development + 1.7 million documents in its digital library IEEE RFID 2008

  3. IEEE’s business • Publications 144 transactions, journals and magazines • Conferences + 850 conferences annually • Standards e.g., everyone knows & uses 802.11 IEEE RFID 2008

  4. Most importantly, it’s about PEOPLE! +375K strong! IEEE’s business con’t. IEEE RFID 2008

  5. Where is RFID in IEEE? It all started with… • A white paper in IEEE-USA (2005) • Followed by a position statement THEN.. • RFID Technology Institute accepted as Educational Partner • Followed by… IEEE RFID 2008

  6. Where is RFID in IEEE? • IEEE’s emerging technologies committee (New Technology Directions) adopted RFID • Which resulted in 2 technical conferences IEEE RFID 2007 & IEEE RFID 2008 • To review, accept and publish technical papers • To enlighten on issues (pragmatic & policy) that impact the growth of the technology IEEE RFID 2008

Where is RFID in IEEE? • Increased interest • # of technical societies increased • 8 in 2007; 15 in 2008 • Capped only by organizers’ limits! • Modest increase in # of papers submitted & accepted; countries of authors • And this from an industry-driven technology (vs. academic)! IEEE RFID 2008
