What is Further Mathematics? Further Maths: • is an AS/A level qualification • is designed to be studied alongside the standard Maths AS/A levels • has content which is both broader and deeper than the standard Maths A level • carries UCAS points in exactly the same way as other AS/A levels Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre
Why do Further Mathematics? Studying Further Maths will: • help your understanding of the standard Maths A level and possibly increase your standard Maths grade • make you think! Numerical Methods • Numerical Methods In this module we will study algorithms for solving problems in continuous mathematics (as distinguished from discrete mathematics). Many of these problems arise from the calculus you will be studying in your core A-Level modules. As such this module will not only introduce you to a different style of mathematics but will also reinforce, and improve your understanding of, material in your A-Level. What topics are studied? • Pure Maths topics developed further from the standard A level include: Functions Algebra Differential Equations Calculus Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre
What topics are studied? • In Applied Maths you can develop the applied topics from your standard Maths A level to a higher level, or broaden your knowledge into different topics • Applied Maths modules may be studied in: Statistics Mechanics Decision & Discrete Maths Numerical Analysis Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre
How are the AS and A level qualifications made up? • You need 3 modules for an AS in Further Maths, one of which must be Further Pure Maths 1, so we add Decision 1 and Numerical Methods • You need 3 more for the A-level in Further Maths, one of which must be Further Pure Maths 2 Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre
How will studying through the Further Mathematics Centre work? • A lot more of of your studying will be done independently • Your studies will be managed by a tutor • You will use resources on an extensive, purpose-written website • You will learn to make effective use of your textbook Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre
How will I work with my Further Mathematics tutor 1? • Lessons will be taught at Keele University by Dave Miller and David Bedford • 2 hours teaching time, simple refreshments available before and part way through sessions • We provide texts, all the work, organise your study, and track your progress so that we can keep the school informed of your progress and write reports for parents Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre
How will I work with my Further Mathematics tutor 2? • Our sessions will involve teaching • You do examples elsewhere (2-3 hours plus your normal school time for homework) • We will set you tasks between our sessions • We expect you to be active participants and to enjoy the work – as well as find it a challenge • We will use interactive whiteboards and software to help our teaching and your learning Keele and the Potteries Further Mathematics Centre
