  3. What are the Parts of a Plant? flower leaves stem roots

  4. What Do Roots Do? • I think a root’s job is to… • Collect food and water from the ground. • Hold the plant in the ground. • Predict what you think would happen if a plant lost its roots? Why? • Test your prediction. Observe the plant for one week.

  5. What Do Stems Do? • I think a stem’s job is to… • Carry water to the leaves. • Help hold up the plant. Carnation Experiment! • Test your hypothesis

  6. What Do Leaves Do? • I think a leaf’s job is to… • Make food for the plant. • What is chlorophyll? • What is photosynthesis? • What else does a green leaf need to make food?

  7. The Formula for Making Plant Food green leaves air water sunlight plant food or Carbon Dioxide + Chlorophyll Water = Sugar + Sunlight

  8. What Do Flowers Do? • I think a flower’s job is to… • Make seeds. • Make fruit which contain seeds. • Make seeds to grow into new plants.

  9. Life Cycle of a Plant

  10. Review Roots -Take the food and water from the ground. -Hold the plant in the ground. Stems -Hold the plant up. -Carries water to the leaves. Leaves -Make food for the plant. Flowers -Makes seeds and fruit. -Seeds from the flower make new plants.

  12. A Seed—Inside and Out Glossary: • Seed Coat: Outer layer of the seed that protects the inside. • Cotyledon: Used for food until the first true leaves emerge and the new plant can start to photosynthesis. • Germination: When a seed starts to grow. The process occurs only when all environmental conditions have been met. (Sun, air, water) • Chlorophyll: Green cells, in plant stems and leaves, that trap energy from the sun. Essential for photosynthesis. • Photosynthesis: The plant uses chlorophyll, water from the soil, gas from the air (carbon dioxide), and energy from the sunlight to make food.

  13. Plants Change as they Grow Instructions for Seed Growing Bags: • Fold paper towel and place it in the bag. • Staple through the bag and towel about two inches from the bottom. • Drop three different types of seeds in the bag. • Add water to dampen the towel. • Hang seed bag in window. • Observe your seed bag each day for one month. Measurement Activity • Use a ruler to measure your plant to the nearest inch and centimeter. Record any changes in size on your growth chart in your plant log. • Click on this fun website to practice your measurement skills: http://www.funbrain.com/measure/index.html
