Outline • Purpose of moderation • Submitting material for moderation • Physics moderation resources • Using an assessment task
Purpose of moderation To provide assurance that: • assessments are fair, valid and at the national standard • teachers are making consistent judgements about student performance.
Submitting material for moderation • Moderation cover sheet • Task, marking schedule and student work- 4 samples for Unit Standards and 8 for Achievement Standards • Any additional explanatory notes (for example if assessing 90252 by portfolio of practical work) • Optional teacher-selected assessed work for professional feedback
Teacher-selected assessed work • Teachers can send additional samples of student work to ask a specific question of the moderator • Up to four additional samples can be submitted – these must be for the same standard as is being moderated • Paired samples on either side of a grade boundary would help to determine that boundary • Feedback is given separately and not included in the moderation report

Best practice workshops Planned physics workshops in 2009 • Auckland South-East July 14 • Hamilton October 6 • Napier October 7 • Palmerston North October 8 • Christchurch November 17 • Dunedin November 18 • Invercargill November 19
Using an assessment task • Best practice: element-by-element check against the standard before use • Commercial resources - check for the latest version • Generic schedules (e.g. TKI) must be customised with evidence statements to include examples of all evidence on which judgements are to be made. (“evidence” = student answers)
