Outline • Background • How RFID works • Different Types • Uses • Problem Statement • Our Proposed Solution • RFID Reader • Electronic Door Lock • Microcontroller • Web Site • Conclusion
How does RFID work? • Tags are powered by the Radio Signal itself Image Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:RFID_backscatter.png
How does RFID work? Different Types • Passive • Entire operation is powered by radio signal • Ex: Seaman’s Center Access Cards • Semi-Passive • Battery only powers microchip, NOT broadcast • Ex: Sensors used to track shipments of goods • Active • Battery powers microchip AND broadcast • Ex: Electronic Toll Collection Systems (I-PASS)
How does RFID work? Uses • Electronic Toll Collection (Active) • Loss Prevention (Passive)
Problem Statement We are looking to create an expandable access control system with a web interface to allow us to control access for multiple users based on the time of day.
RFID Reader/Tags • Manufactured by Parallax, Inc. • Can act as reader or transmitter • We are using read mode only • RS-232 Protocol • Passive Tags
Electronic Door Lock • Fail Safe/Fail Secure (remains locked during blackouts) • 12/24VDC • Driven by a 12v relay connected to our microprocessor • 2,500 lb Forcing Strength • Continuous Duty Operation
Microcontroller • Microchip PIC 18F452 • Onboard Hardware USART • Rapid Development • Powerful
Website • Server running Windows Server 2003 • ASP.NET 2.0 • MSSQL Server Database Backend • Connected to Access Controller via RS-232 • Dynamic DNS Client • Located in close physical proximity to door being controlled
Possible Enhancements • Ability to control access based on time of day • Integrate Security Camera footage onto website • “Guest Access” where access is granted a set number of times only
