Material and Methods • Doncaster home to 2 Motocross parcs in 20 miles • Children under 16 presenting to Emergency department • Retrospective analysis of 61 patients’ case notes • A postal questionnaire used to collect information • Non responders contacted by telephone
Age and Sex distribution • Participants as young as 6 years get on the track • Mean age 12.1 years; Range 7 – 15 years.
Age of start and Experience Age at start of sport • Experience Range 2 – 14 years (Mean age 8.3 years)
Treatment offered Surgical intervention in admitted Pts
Length of admission in hospital School days lost
Willingness to return to sport Residual disability
Concerns • Increasing number of children affected • Significant morbidity (722 school days lost, mean 12.7 days per child) • Sport becoming increasingly popular but lacks stringent guidelines and regulation • Guardians consent to grievous hurt • Robust licensing by Auto Cycle Union (ACU) and Amateur Motocross Association (AMCA) • Inadequately trained marshals on tracks
Recommendations • Regular Track rading & maintenance • Strict bike scrutiny events • More trained marshals • Control overcrowding • Segregation on tracks • Strict participation in races restricted to >10 yrs old
