  2. Who’s Running This Place? (“Chris1.”) (“Bobby1”) Melissa Hawkins is the primary contact for adoptions and rescue (“Contact Us”) Bobby Painter works also on complaints and other animal emergencies Everyone of the staff members are certified to give rabies shots (“Contact Us”) Chris Tyson is in charge of the Jackson County Animal Shelter. He is a primary contact for animal emergencies, questions, and complaints (“Contact Us”) (“Melissa_pic”)

  3. History LUCIOUS The Jackson County Animal Shelter was built in the early 1980’s. It has always been an adoption shelter, yet does euthanize animals that are not taken in a certain period. The shelter is a public health service for cats and dogs (“12450497”) The Shelter itself is a small concrete building, with caged housing for dogs and cats. The animals have a limit roaming space within their cages and exterior yard. (“Hawkins”)

  4. Services The Jackson County Animal Shelter is a rabies and animal control shelter. It is an adoption shelter that picks up strays and also takes in animals. Everyone at the shelter also is certified in treating animal bites along with rabies. The shelter also runs a volunteer program that is administered by the Department of Public Health. Volunteers help in bathing pets, fund raising, cleaning cages, general socializing or walking pets, and clerical work.  (“Home”)

  5. What Can You Get For Working Here? Employee benefits at the Jackson County Animal Shelter are remarkable. Workers of the shelter receive a 401K; an extra retirement fund from the county which also the county pays for sick days, holidays, and vacations; medical and dental insurance is provided; and if one were to die the immediate family will get $20,000 to help with funeral costs etc.  (“Hawkins”)

  6. Finances Shown by the chart the total operating expenses has increased by 46% over the years between 2002 through 2007. This trend is also the same as animal costs have also increased by 70% over the years. A reason for this could be the cost it takes to vaccinate animals with different shots.

  7. Euthanasia The Jackson County Animal Shelter does euthanize pets who are not taken in a certain amount of time. As shown by the chart euthanasia has decreased by 40% for cats and 34% for dogs. (“A.S.R.D. 2002, 2005, 2007”)

  8. Facts About Euthanasia Between three to four million cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters every year! 25% of the animals surrendered are purebreds In seven years two cats can produce 420,000 offspring's. It’s important to spay and neuter. This limits production of offspring, helps animals live longer healthier lives, limits less hormone-related medical disorders, leads to less aggressive animals, and roam (“Info and Links”)

  9. The Good Within the Shelter Although the facts about euthanasia in this shelter and others is chilling to myself and others, this shelter is helpful. Shown by the chart, adoption for dogs has increased to 68% and 40% for cats. Although the Jackson County Animal Shelter is not a heaven of a home for the animals, it is a better lifestyle than what some animals came from. Most animals in the shelter had been beaten, battered, and/or abandoned. Although the shelter is not a normal home environment the facility, the workers there provide love and care for the animals.
