Animal Shelter Service Learning Katie Kemp
Lowndes County Animal Shelter • They serve as a shelter to homeless animals of all types in the Lowndes County area • Their main goals are to protect the public from stray or dangerous animals and to prevent animal cruelty • They show their devotion to the prevention of cruelty to animals by investigating animal cruelty cases and educating the public about owner responsibilities
Animal Shelter Services • Enforcing Animal Control Ordinances • Investigating animal abuse and cruelty complaints • Humanely capturing distressed, nuisance, or dangerous animals • Sheltering stray and owned pets • Accept unwanted pets for possible adoption • Officer healthy pets for adoption • Humanely euthanizing elderly and ill animals at the owner's request • Offer Annual Rabies and Microchip Clinics to the Public • Offer refuge to pets during disaster evacuations, accidents involving the owner and pet, eviction, and while the owner is detained or incarcerated
Why I Chose the Animal Shelter • I wanted to volunteer at the animal shelter because I like animals and wanted to contribute to help stray animals have a place to live and possibly get adopted • I have pets at home and miss them so I liked spending time with other dogs
Dog Cages • I was assigned to the dog cages
Walking the Dogs • First I had to take the dogs for a walk outside in the yard
Cleaning the cages • All the debris in the cages had to be sprayed down a drain with a water hose • Then I sprayed the cages with sanitizer
Scrubbing the cages • To make sure the cages were clean I had to scrub the floor and walls
Drying the cages • To get rid of all the water I squeeged the floors
Cleaning the Dishes • The last steps to cleaning the cages were cleaning the food and water dishes then refilling them with fresh food and water
Clean Cages= Happy Dogs • After cleaning the cages I released the dogs so they could enjoy their new clean environment
American Red Cross • Every two seconds someone in America needs blood • Blood is needed for emergencies and for people who have cancer, blood disorders, sickle cell, anemia and other illnesses. Some people need regular blood transfusions to live. • The Red Cross serves as the bridge between over 4 million generous blood donors and millions of patients in need each year
Blazin’ Blood Drive • To contribute to the American Red Cross I gave a pint of blood at the 3rd annual Blazin’ Blood Drive held by Valdosta State’s football team
After Finishing Service Learning • Completing service learning left me with a positive attitude • I felt good about contributing to the community • Cleaning the dog cages gave homeless dogs a sanitary place to live with food and water and a chance for adoption • Giving blood helped save lives of those who need blood
