Ubiquitous Computing James Landay & Jason Hong Spring 2001
Let’s try something new… • Break up into groups of 3 or 4 • Talk about papers for 25 minutes • What exactly is ubiquitous computing? Come up with a 2-4 sentence description • How does ubicomp relate to other ideas we’ve discussed? E.g. Universal usability, communities, the web, etc • What other ubicomp issues should we discuss as a group?
Tracking the Discussion • Putting computers everywhere • Periphery • Jetsons – computers brushing your teeth • Make interface "unconscious" • In everyday objects • Access to technology and making it usable by everyone • Embedded computers • Telephones, automobiles, clothes, surrounds you, everywhere
Tracking the Discussion • Calm Computing • Car, anti-lock brakes • Hard drives • Dangling string • Usable / understandable by people
Tracking the Discussion • Will it make us lazy? Allow us to be lazy? • Jetsons / Flintstones – more human interaction in stone age • Good lazy / bad lazy • Relying on computer too much (where it's not best tool?)
Tracking the Discussion • Universal usability • Teleconferencing easier • Connect the devices together • Web interface to administer devices • Complexity of all this • Security / Privacy • Cyberstalking • Marketing data / advertising
Tracking the Discussion • Out of context • Cameras everywhere • Store information, more storage than info • Human implants • Safe, cheap, beneficial • Parents implant it into kids? Digital Angel?
For Next Week • Brainstorming day! • Project 3 • Out tonight • Jef Raskin • Helped develop Macintosh • Tue Apr 17, 7:00PM • 230 Bechtel, Sibley Auditorium
