Numeracy and Maths Wednesday 26th March Parent Information Event
Parking lot • We have set up an area where you can leave any questions that you may have. Please take a post it note, write your question on it and then add it to the parking lot. • Any questions not answered this morning will be addressed, where possible, through the school blog in the Numeracy and Maths area.
What is Numeracy? mathematical competence: a competence in the mathematical skills needed to cope with everyday life and an understanding of information presented mathematically, e.g. in graphs, charts, or tables
The curriculum • Highland Council have invested time and money into furthering knowledge and understanding of maths and how best to teach it. • The Highland Numeracy Group have worked on producing documents to support the teaching of maths – the Highland Numeracy Progression, Time Progression, Measure Progression and Money Progression. • Development of skills and knowledge through the levels – Early, First, Second
That’s not how I learned! • Talk to someone next to you about your school maths experience • Was it similar? • We were all taught slightly differently • Who is right?
Why the focus? • AfE • dip in mental arithmetic
Basic facts • What are they?
Your turn! • You will need a pen and piece of paper • This will test your mental skills! Write down your answer for each question. • IKAN • How did you get on?
Communication • How do we share what is happening in learning and teaching at Crown? • Open mornings/afternoons • Parent appointments with class teachers • Formal reporting • Parent workshops • Parent Council meetings – go along to a meeting to see what it’s all about! • School blog – numeracy
Time to explore • What does it look like in my child’s class? • With (or without) your child have a look at the different activities set up around the hall and give them a go! • They are set up in Early (Nursery and P1), First (P2, P3 and P4) and Second (P5, P6 and P7)
What do you think? • Please let us know your views about this event so that we can develop how we share information about the curriculum with you. • Was it helpful? • Did it answer any questions? • Would you like to see more events like this? • What was missing? • Was this a good time of day to run this event?
