THE RIGHTNESS OF RIGHT “Sanctify them in the truth, Your word is truth” (John 17:17) Jesus said!
Not the “Rightness” of Ourselves • But some things we accept. • 2 + 2 =? • E = MC squared, cubed?? • Why accept absolutes in some areas and deny them in others? • Everything is relative, and that’s a fact! Really? That’s the way we “reason” in religion.
Wouldn’t You Like To Be “Right” Spiritually? • Truth sanctifies. God’s truth. It is absolute. • If “we” are right, no glory to us. We merely agree with Him. • His wisdom and commandments aren’t “politically correct”. They are eternal and divine.
Is All “Religion” Good? • Jesus came into one of the most “religious” societies ever and set up God’s/His Kingdom. • Matt. 23; Matt. 15 • Col. 2:20-23 Jesus assessment. • Rev. 2:5 – the most “conservative” church.
Two Extremes • 1. A loving God accepts anything we offer. Like a mother “making” over summer camp crafts. • Rom. 11:22; God’s comments in Malachi • 2. Everything must be “specified”. Even when God leaves the details open. • Baptism details. Lord’s Supper details.
Generic and Specific Authority • Details of the Ark – Doors, Windows, dimensions, materials - Where material obtained, how to apply pitch. • Great commission – Material to teach (Matt. 28:19f; Jude 3; 2 John 9) – How do we get this material out. • Direct command; Approved apostolic example; “Necessary” inference. • God IS particular. Legalist vs. Christian.
