Main Idea? • Renaissance thinkers sought to redefine themselves in relation to church and state
Humanism and Religion • Thomas More- humanism • Never allowed his public affairs to interfere with private prayer and charities • Educated daughters in Christian and classical subjects
Humanism and Religion cont. • More was King Henry VIII’s closest servant • Executed for treason • He opposed Henry’s divorce • “The King’s good servant, but God’s first.”
The Bible in English • Make Bible a part of teaching • Brought Christian sacred writings down from the pulpit and into people’s homes • Printing press- translations into modern languages affordable • More accessible to everyone
The Bible in English • 1522- Luther translated New Testament into German • 1530s- William Tyndale- leader of the Protestant Reformation • Translated it into English
The Bible in English • Translations = assaults • Translating without official approval from pope (or Henry after he broke from church) was deadly • Tyndale- burned at stake for heresy in 1536 • Official translation of Bible (King James Version) borrow from Tyndale • (IRONY!)
Metaphysical and Cavalier Poets • Dirty, naughty poets • (not really, but people thought so) • John Donne- known for witty poems about romantic love • Moved away from religious issues of the day

Cavalier poets • Acted like knights, but didn’t care about high seriousness or Christian chivalry • Poets- • Wrote lyrical poems of great polish, sophistication, wit, and raciness
