A feasibility study on a manual e-waste treatment facility • Carried out by UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organisation) • Aims: • Estimate the all financial flows which occur during the operation of local recycling & refurbishment businessess • Suggested 2 main business types • Recycling Operations • Refurbishment Operations

  4. Collection of E-waste • Purchase of bulk volumes of waste material which can include: • Obsolete material • Scrap material • Devices apt for refurbishment (most profitable) • How much material is needed to ensure sustainability in the Refurbishment and Recycling operation?

  5. Refurbishment • ~25t/y 680 PCs & 370 TV sets per year • Currently sustainable • still no guaranteed income due to: • Sales prices – completive low prices –Netbooks • High purchase price of bulk material with no guarantee of material suitable for refurbishment

  6. Recycling • ~230 t/y recycled WEEE only • Current trends & availability of recyclable material suggest break even targets are not going to be met • Need for investment- grants /seed funding • Treatment of CTR monitors can be costly • Printed Wiring Boards (PWBs) sold to international end-processors for substantial revenue (700t of WEEE required per year) • Collection facility to gather these critical volumes is needed

  7. Regional cross-national hub • Enable the gathering of large volumes of fraction materials like PWBs • Large volumes allow recyclers to participate in global market • Ensures maximum return value on their secondary raw materials being sold • Major cooperation needed by government bodies
