The Board of County Commissioner's Employee Service Awards recognizes outstanding service and dedication of employees in various departments. Today's honorees include Teresa Y. Maloney and Cynthia A. Dennis from Code Enforcement, Gary L. Bowers from Fire Rescue Operations, Bruce H. Johnson from Highway Construction in Public Works, and Johnny L. Spurlock from Roads and Drainage in Public Works.

Board of County Commissioner’s Employee Service Awards • Today’s honorees are recognized for outstanding service and dedication:
Teresa Y. Maloney – 20 Years • Teresa was born and raised in Orlando and graduated from Edgewater High School. • She was hired by Orange County in 1987 as a Clerk Typist with Utilities. • In 1990, Teresa was promoted to Administrative Assistant and transferred to Fire Rescue. • She also received her certification as a Municipal Fire Inspector shortly thereafter.
Teresa Maloney – 20 Years • In 1993, Teresa transferred to the Building Division as a Code Enforcement Officer. • She became one of the first female Building Inspectors in that division. • Since March 2000, she has worked as a Senior Code Enforcement Officer and directly supervises 10 great officers. • She has been instrumental in demolishing over 500 dilapidated houses and 200 crack houses as part of our ReNew Program. • Teresa has a Bachelors Degree in Art and is certified as: A Building Inspector, Municipal Fire Inspector and Code Enforcement Officer. • She has one daughter: Brittany, who attends Florida A&M; and a Lhasa Apso – Mercedes. *
Cynthia A. Dennis - 20 Years • Cindy was born and raised in Orlando and graduated from Lyman High School. • In 1987, she was hired as an Administrative Assistant to work in the Purchasing Department. • She has worked as a Geographic Data Technician at Fire Rescue. In 1996 she was promoted to Program Coordinator with Fire Rescue’s Safety and Risk Management Division.
Cindy Dennis – 20 Years • Cindy has been married to Carl for 18 years and they have two children: Brittany, 14, attends Central Florida Prep School; and Brooke, 8. • Cindy enjoys teaching children 6 to 18 to dance. • She also is an avid reader. *
Gary L. Bowers - 30 Years • Gary was born and raised in Orlando and graduated from Evans High School. • He was hired by the Taft Fire Control District in 1977. • Gary transferred to the Pine Hills Fire District when it came under the control of the Orange County Fire Rescue Department. • He was promoted to Engineer in 1982.
Gary Bowers – 30 Years • Gary received a Letter of Commendation for rescuing an occupant from a burning building in 1982. • He also received a Unit Citation for the Wedgefield Brush Fires of 2000; the 2001 Wedgefield Brush Fire; the 2001 East Orlando Brush Fire; and for a 2006 EMS Event. • He was deployed in 2002 to the Utah Federal Wildland Fires for two weeks. • Gary has served on Apparatus, Station Design, and PPE Committees; and played for the Fire Rescue Olympic Softball Team from 1985 to 1997. • His hobbies include: hunting, NASCAR, camping and sports. *
Bruce H. Johnson – 25 Years • Bruce is a native of Orange County. He attended Grand Avenue Elementary, Memorial and Jones High Schools and graduated from Dixie Village Christian Academy. • He was hired in 1982 by Utilities as a laborer, was promoted to Construction Foreman and is now a Supervisor working on the Rock Springs Road Project. • Bruce transferred to Public Works in 1989 and was promoted to Engineering Inspector. He is now an Engineering Inspector II.
Bruce Johnson – 25 Years • Bruce has worked on a number of projects including: Bonneville Improvement Project, Holden Heights Phase I, several bridges, Econ Trail and Riverside Outfall. He is presently working on the West Orange Trail Project. • He is married to Lori and they have two children: Lindsey, 16; and Timothy, 8. • Bruce lives in Eustis and is a volunteer firefighter for Lake County. • He enjoys meeting people and is a member of the Trinity Evangelical Church. • His hobbies include: hunting, fishing and camping. *
Johnny L. Spurlock – 20 Years • Johnny was born in Harlan, Kentucky and moved to Central Florida in 1958. He graduated from Apopka High School in 1968. • Johnny was hired in 1987 as an Equipment Operator III on the Major Asphalt Repair Crew. • He was promoted to Foreman II and was Paving Crew Foreman for 16 years. • He was promoted to Inspector II and is now a Contract Administrator.
Johnny Spurlock – 20 Years • Johnny has over 29 years of service with Orange County. He also worked for Emergency Medical Services as an EMS Specialist. • He is married to Janet and he has 5 children, and 7 grandchildren. • Johnny is also known as “Santa”, and has been appearing as Santa now since 1977. • He has worked most of the malls, and for the past 13 years has charmed visitors at Downtown Disney.
Johnny Spurlock – 20 Years • Johnny enjoys bringing smiles to the faces of small children, especially the kids from Great Oaks Village. • He also enjoys working in his garden, installing new flowerbeds and water gardens. • He has an HO scale model train and plans on designing a layout of Orange County with a light rail and mass transit system. *
Timothy M. Jones – 20 Years • Tim was born and raised in Orlando. • He graduated from Orlando Baptist Temple, and completed a four year program with the International Union of Operating Engineers. • Tim was originally hired by Orange County to work at the Utilities Water Distribution Division in 1987. • He has been promoted several times to: Equipment Operator, Foreman and Inspector II. He is currently an Inspector III.
Timothy Jones – 20 Years • Tim has earned both a Class “C” and “B” Water Distribution Technician Licenses. • He was the Employee of the Quarter in 1988. • He has been married to Candy for 29 years and they have two children: Summer, 28, a 2001 UCF graduate; and Jonathan, 20, currently attending UCF, majoring in accounting. • Tim enjoys time with his grandson: Luke; watching football, especially the Seminoles, Auburn Tigers, Tampa Bay Bucs and the Orlando Predators. • In his spare time he watches action movies, and travels. *
Solomon Junior Jones – 20 Years • Solomon was born in Mt. Dora and graduated from Mt. Dora High School. • He joined Orange County in 1987 with the RIB and berm crew as an Equipment Operator. • Solomon transferred to the Tanker Section, then Collections. • He has been promoted to Maintenance Specialist and Utilities Maintenance Coordinator.
Solomon Jones – 20 Years • Solomon has been married to Uzeria for 21 years and they have one son: Solomon Jones III, a University of South Florida graduate who now plays professional basketball with the Atlanta Hawks. • They also have two daughters: Carmella, who attends nursing school; and Nakia, an honor roll student at Mt. Dora High School. • Solomon’s hobbies include: all sports, especially fishing and remote control cars. • He also helps mentor young people through his church. *
Robert A. Sutherland – 20 Years • Roberts was born and raised in Orlando and graduated from Oak Ridge High School. • In 1987, he was hired as a Maintenance Person II at the Utilities Water Division. • Bob has been promoted to Maintenance Technician II; Pump Specialist; Supply Expeditor and Industrial Mechanic II.
Bob Sutherland – 20 Years • Bob has the following certifications: Class “C” and “B” Water Distribution Field Technician licenses. • He also has earned the following awards: Division Employee (twice); Department Employee of the Quarter; Supervisory Development Program graduate. • He is married to Cheryl and he has three children: Brandon, 26; Carissa, 24; and Matthew, 17. • He also has one granddaughter: Angelina, 6. • Bob’s hobbies include: gold, NASCAR, football, basketball, volleyball, camping, hunting and fishing. *
Duane Clarence Becker – 20 Years • Duane was born in Charles City, Iowa. • He graduated from high school and Universal Trade School in Omaha, Nebraska before joining the military in 1965. • Duane spent 30 months in Europe while stationed with the military. • He relocated to Orlando in 1986 and joined Orange County as a wastewater operator trainee. • Duane was promoted to Equipment Operator II in Water Production in 1987.
Duane Becker – 20 Years • Duane worked in the Water Division as a Maintenance Technician and was later promoted to Industrial Mechanic. That’s where he works today. • He is married to Rose and they have two children: Steven, 36; and Jennifer, 34. • Duane enjoys camping, fishing, and hunting. *
Remi Lopez Jr. – 20 Years • Remi was born in Brooklyn, NY and moved to Orlando in 1980. • He is a graduate of Winter Park High School and Valencia Community College. • He was hired in 1987 to work in Utilities Engineering Division as an Engineering Technician III. • He was promoted to Senior CADD Technician and then as a Team Leader with the Sanitary System Evaluation Team.
Remi Lopez – 20 Years • Remi is one of the few Message Center Call Routers responsible for transferring 3-1-1 calls received during an emergency to the Emergency Operations Center. • Remi has three children: Remi Alexander, 15; Eric Javier, 14; and Daniel Ricardo, 13 – all home schooled. • He enjoys playing keyboards; watching movies; sports, reading science fiction; playing basketball, paintball, riding bikes, canoeing and camping. • He especially enjoys spending time with his children and watching his boys grow up. *
