    2. Reasons for Applied Science Focus within CHC ‘Too boring’ ‘Not enough experiments’ ‘I am not going to study Science when I leave school’ ‘Not an important subject like Maths, English and ICT’ High ability students not making expected progress

    3. Aim of CHC Science department To make Science more relevant, vocational and applied Remove myth that Science is difficult Increase practical work Increase enjoyment of the subject Ensure students are more aware of the huge variety of careers which use Science Increase A Level uptake and STEM careers

    4. WIKID SCIENCE Developed by Association of Science Education Extension from UPD8 materials Every Science lesson, whatever the topic, gets students motivated to learn Themed units set Science in dozens of relevant contexts Then the engagement is converted into real understanding

    5. How does upd8wikid push students to the highest levels of achievement? Each unit focuses on a few 'Big Ideas' central to understanding, not a long list of content objectives. The units place are motivating and engaging, the science is set in the context of real life situations to promote interest in Science and the work of scientists. AT CHC WIKID has been adapted to incorporate the L2 Learning approach.

    6. Units Available in WIKID In year 7: Forensics (Particles), Cook (Chemical Reactions), Extinction (Atmosphere & Variation), Electromancer (Electricity & Magnetism), Accident and Emergency (Cells), Alien (Space) In year 8: Design a home (Energy), Species at War (Ecosystems), Studio Magic (Light & Sound), Pyrotechnics (Elements & Compounds), Catastrophe (Rocks), Live & Kicking (Health & Disease) In year 9: Adolescence (Behaviour), Car 2.0 (Env. Chemistry), Adventure Sports (Forces)

    7. What does WIKID look like in action?

    8. Effect of WIKID on attainment at CHC

    9. What do the students think?

    10. WIKID Summary Superb opportunity for Science teaching to be revolutionised, putting the onus for learning back onto the students, and bringing back the awe and wonder. The materials try to engage students, and their motivation has improved. Consequently they are learning without knowing that they are learning. Every lesson students could recall virtually all that had been 'taught' the lesson before - even the weaker students. Students couldn't wait for the next lesson. Leads to improved attainment.
