Integrate dry machining systems when possible following the dry machining requirements • EXPLANATION: Sawing, milling, turning, drilling and reaming are machining technologies that have already implemented dry machining as a possibility, developing the requirements that must be fulfilled to achieve this technique. The tools used for dry machining have to suit some specific requirements. The options available under these include the following: • The use of very high positive rake angles (30º) on submicron cemented carbide tools, which will reduce the overall cutting energy significantly. • The development of refractory-type tool materials that can withstand high temperatures. • The use of ultra-hard tool materials such as diamond and CBN. • The development of coatings on tools that can withstand high temperatures and at the same time provide a lubricating effect to reduce friction. • CLASSIFICATION: • Topic: COOLANT AND LUBRICANT • Machine Structure: COOLING SYSTEM • Life Cycle phase: SELECTION OF COMPONENTS • Type of machine tools: GENERAL • Material selection: - • KEYWORDS: dry machining • SOURCES: Sreejith, P.S., Ngoi, B.K.A. “Dry machining: Machining of the future”, Journal of Materials Processing Technology 101, Elsevier, 2000 • Weinert, K., Inasaki, I., Sutherland, J.W., Wakabayashi, T. “Dry machining and minimum quantity lubrication”, 2004 • LINKS: • FIGURES/GRAPHS: 027
