“We are all captives of the pictures in our head.” - Walter Lippman We depend on the “pictures in our heads,” many of them delivered by the news media, to tell us about the world.
Crime, Youth, and Media in the U.S. • Youth rarely appear in the news but when they do they are unduly connected to violence and crime. • People of color are disproportionately portrayed as perpetrators of crime and underrepresented as victims. • 76% of Americans form their opinion about crime from the news 2001 Study by Berkeley Media Studies Group and Justice Policy Institute
Representation of Youth in UK Media • 76% of young people think the press portrays them in a bad light (Citizenship Foundation) • 71% of media coverage of young people is negative (Children & Young People Now) • 39% of the public are unaware of the positive things young people do (Vinspired) Conclusion: Negative headlines around young people potentially increase the negative perception held by some young people about themselves, as well as by adults. 2009 “Make Hoodies History” Conference
Solutions… • Work with the media to give a more accurate picture of youth issues • Make data available • Prepare young people to speak for themselves and give them the opportunity to do so
