Roman Pontiffs • Linus – Elected in 67. He created the first 15 bishops. He forbade women to enter a church with their heads uncovered. During his reign, Mark and Luke were martyred.
Roman Pontiffs • Cletus – Elected in 76. Martyred. He drew up rules for the consecration of bishops. He had an oratory built near the tomb of St. Peter for the remains of martyrs.
Roman Pontiffs • Clement – Elected in 88. Died a martyr. Restored the sacrament of confirmation according to the rules of St. Peter. To his time, it is attributed the use of “amen” in ceremonies.
Roman Pontiff • Evaristus – Elected in 97. Greek. He divided areas in parishes. Established “senior priests” which is said to be the beginning of the present day College of Cardinals.

Pope • Greek for “Father”. • Official title was used in the 11th Century. Gregory VII used the title. • Originally used the title of “Bishop of Rome” – the pope still maintains this title.
