Rome Conquers Italy • Legions: Roman soldiers organized into large military unites • Romans controlled Italian Peninsula • Defeated the Etruscans in the North and the Greek city-states in the South.
What happens to the people who are now conquered? • Why was Rome so lenient?
Empire Emerges • Empire – A civilization or country that takes over another civilization or country without extending the same rights to the conquered people.
Punic Wars • War between Rome and Carthage broke out for control of the Mediterranean. • After 3 separate wars, Rome finally laid siege to Carthage, burned the city, and sold 50,000 people into slavery • Gave Rome Dominance over the Mediterranean
The Republic Collapses • Rome’s increasing wealth and expanding territory gave way to many problems • What could those problems be?
Problems: • Gap between the rich and the poor • Enslaved population • Civil War • Breakdown of the military

Julius Caesar • Served 1 year • Captured Gaul (France) • Popular with troops and people • Senate became scared of his power and ambition and demanded he return home and disband his army
Caesar defied the senate and destroyed anyone who was in his way • Appointed dictator for life
Reforms • Granted Roman citizenship to more in provinces • Expanded Senate • Created jobs for average people (public building projects, etc.) • Fabulous festivals
Out of fear of his growing power and influence powerful members of the senate assassinated Caesar on March 15, 44BC
