  2. Hard News • New story that is important to read now • It is happening now or it happened very recently • Usually in the front section of the paper • Address all Ws and H questions • Most important facts are given right away Read the handout: Car Accidents

  3. Soft News • Not as important or timely as hard news • Longer than hard news reports • Usually in separate section, like “Lifestyle,” “Arts,” or “Sports.”

  4. Hard News: Purpose, Audience, Topic Purpose • To inform the reader • People are looking for information about the event or topic Audience • For general public (anyone who chooses to read the newspaper the report is printed in)

  5. Topic • Can be very broad • Possible topics are war, accidents, weather disasters, changes that impact people, government issues, and world events Remember to keep purpose, audience, and topic in mind when you write your report.

  6. Your News Report Purpose: to inform readers Topic: Your choice. Audience: Local newspaper readers.
