If you heard a Fairmont address given as “41 S”, it would be located along the area marked with a green line; the exact location (north of Fairmont or south of Fairmont would depend on the numerics given for that address)
Address Numerics • The numbers assigned to an address identify two important things about the location: • How far down that particular road the address is located • Which side of the road the address will be located
Distance • From a road’s origin (start), addresses are numbered in increments of tenth’s of a mile • 392 Melvin Lane is located .39 miles down Melvin Lane from it’s origin (NC72 West) • 485 Oak Grove Church Rd is located .48 miles down Oak Grove Church Rd from it’s origin (NC 72 West) • Even-numbered addresses are (generally) on the right, if you are traveling away from the road’s origin • 392 Melvin Lane should be on the right traveling off NC 72 • Odd numbered addresses are (generally) on the left, if you are traveling away from the road’s origin • 485 Oak Grove Church Rd should be on the left traveling off NC 72
Question For You • How would you know whether you are traveling toward the road’s origin or away from the road’s origin? • Answer: • Look at the addresses on the mailbox or structures as you ride by • If they are increasing, you are traveling away from the road’s origin • If they are decreasing, you are traveling toward the road’s origin
