GAS RAMLOADING, MAINTENANCE, & TACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS Sergeant John Pokorny San Diego County Sheriff Special Enforcement Detail
LOADING THE GAS RAM • SAFETY FIRST (Gloves, Mask, & be sure you know what you’re doing) • Five Step Process 1.) Remove cap 2.) Check and remove obstructions 3.) Prepare chemical agent • Identify appropriate chemical agent • (Def-Tec 509, 517, 518, 519, 555) • Remove fuze assembly • Always hold upright 4.) Attach the chemical agent to the cap 5.) Reassemble Gas Ram
MAINTENANCE • Clean after every use • Wear mask and gloves • Three Maintenance Tasks 1.) Wash Gas Ram • Pressure Washer with hot soapy water (220 – 240 degrees) • Sandblast • Metal brush, bore brush, and hot soapy water (i.e. Tide, Joy) 2.) Apply anti-seize on threads 3.) Dry completely and store
TACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS • Deliver with at least a 3 man team (2 Officers to deploy the ram and 1 as cover…Unless you have one of these) • Attempt to avoid deploying in kitchen (gas lines) • Attempt to get the ram high enough to avoid furniture • Pull the pin prior to inserting the ram to ensure agent deploys • The other school of thought is to pull pin after to ensure probe is inserted • Just prior to deploying the ram, use distraction techniques on the opposite side of the location (i.e. LSD)
