Harvesting, Mining and Drilling How we obtain our Resources
Harvesting • Harvesting involves collecting material that is above ground or close to the surface. • Peat and wood are harvested materials.
Peat • Peat is made from decayed plant matter. It is burned for energy and forms in bogs and wetlands. Peat is not as widely used as it used to be.
Mining • Mining involves digging deep into the ground. Resources that we mine include rocks, minerals and coal.
Subsurface Mining • Shaft is dug parallel to deposit • Explosives are used to loosen the deposit • Dangers: • Mine collapse • Explosion of natural gas stores • Lung disease from mine air pollutants • More expensive, but less environmental damage compared to surface mining
Drilling • Drilling involves putting a well thousands of feet into the ground to reach natural gas or oil.
