Mustang athletes are held to a higher standard .

  9. Grapevine/Colleyville ISD Student Athlete Agreement It is an honor and privilege to be selected to represent a GCISD athletic team. Student-‐athletes must recognize this position as an honor in which they will be held to a higher standard of responsibility and accountability than that of the general school population. Student-‐athletes are expected to be representatives of the school who demonstrate the highest levels of both character and behavior. Each athlete of GCISD must commit to the following: 1. Abstaining from the use of illegal chemical substances including drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, as well as maintaining a positive and healthy lifestyle. 2. Following the spirit and the letter of the rules and regulations of GCISD at all times. 3. Maintaining passing grades in all academic classes for six weeks, nine weeks and semester grading periods from the beginning of the year to the end of the year during my tenure as an athlete. 4.Being a positive role model for my teammates and classmates; including, but not limited to, posting only positive comments to all social media outlets (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc) and websites about my team, teammates and/or coaches. 5. Attending with punctuality all scheduled practices, meetings and competitions. 6. Communicating and demonstrating to my teammates and coaches my expectations for the team. 7. Following with trust and commitment all the decisions of the Head Coach, regardless of my position and/or playing time. 8. Abstaining from participation in hazing, harassment, or discrimination of any manner. 9. Adhering to GCISD’s Athletic Code of Conduct for Student-‐Athletes.

  10. Role of Coach: • Create an environment conducive to the student athlete’s development as a player, athlete, and person • Guide players’ exploration and comprehension of all facets of soccer • Oversee players’ safety • Teach life lessons through the beautiful game • Build teams and make professional decisions on how those teams have to play in order to achieve the desired results. • Choose best 11 based upon team tactics, team cohesiveness, team chemistry and individual ability. • Always display good sportsmanship • www.uil.utexas.edu/athletics/manuals/pdf/sportsmanship_manual.pdf

  11. Role of the Player: • Maintain acceptable GPA (passing is a MINIMUM standard) • Exhibit exemplary behavior in classroom and community • Attend all training sessions and work with grit and enthusiasm • Attend all games and “leave it all on the field” • Accept responsibility to self-train to improve deficiencies • Be punctual • Care responsibly for all issued equipment and always bring what is required • Communicate with your coach to find out what areas you need to improve upon, and take advantage of that feedback by acting on it • Understand team accomplishments ALWAYS take precedence over the quest for individual accolades!!!

  12. Role of the Player (cont’d): • Prioritize academics and GHS Soccer: • High  School  Team  Sports  Dual  Participation:  In  the  event  a  student  athlete   misses  an  GCISD  Athletic  Contest,  without  prior  approval,  to  participate  in  an  activity   not  under  the  direction  of  GCISD,  the  student  athlete  has  chosen  that  activity  over  an   GCISD  sport  he/she  may be  released  from  the  team. • Always display good sportsmanship www.uil.utexas.edu/athletics/manuals/pdf/sportsmanship_manual.pdf • ***Understand that intrinsically motivated players find a higher level of success than those who require constant extrinsic motivation

  13. Successful Players: • Train hard and play your best in matches • Ask your coach how to improve and play your way to the top of your team • Enjoy the opportunity to represent your school/community • Maintain academic eligibility • Exhibit exemplary behavior and sportsmanship “There’s no mystery. He’s always out there after the team training has finished, practicing his shots. The great players don’t rely on their natural ability; they practice to make sure they have that something extra.” -Sir Alex Ferguson on Cristiano Ronaldo after a match winning 41 yard free kick

  14. Role of the Parent: • Transport player to and from training, home games, and bus rendezvous in a timely manner • Support your athlete, the team, and the coaching staff • Volunteer to help with concessions, scoreboard, and fundraisers, but never with coaching. • Aid your player with his or her responsibilities, but do not take on those responsibilities for him or her

  15. Role of the Parent (cont’d): • Always display good sportsmanship www.uil.utexas.edu/athletics/manuals/pdf/sportsmanship_manual.pdf • Comments from the bleachers should be positive and appropriate • When GCISD sponsors an athletic event, it considers that happening to be an extension of the classroom, with the lessons learned as important as those coming out of a textbook. One very important lesson for our students is that of sportsmanship. Please help the Mustangs in promoting good sportsmanship by refraining from derogatory remarks and gestures to players, coaches, officials or other spectators. School athletics is a vital part of student development, and together we can all help our students prepare for the future.

  16. Parents of Successful Players: Parents: • Support your player • Encourage him/her to communicate with the coaching staff • Please understand that undermining the coaching staff to your player often results in impeding his development • Please understand that any type of coaching from the bleachers is inappropriate ***Parents will greatly help or hinder their player’s progress and that of the entire program based solely upon dinner conversation and their own attitudes

  17. How do I appropriately inquire about issues concerning my player (other than playing time)? • 1st: Athlete to coach • 2nd: Athlete to parent • 3rd: Parent AND player to team’s coach • 4th: Parent AND player to head coach and team’s coach ***The coaching staff is very approachable, but please understand that only a player’s actions can move him or her up or down in the program or from the sideline to the pitch. Only players can put in the long and arduous hours that are required to achieve elite athletic success.

  21. Safety/Health/Injury /Illness: • Soccer is a very physical game • In all athletics there is a inherent danger is participation which carries with it the possibility for severe injury or death. • The GHS Soccer and Training Staff will do all we can to prepare athletes physically, instruct them in safe techniques, and provide protection from extreme/dangerous weather.

  22. Safety/Health/Injury /Illness (cont’d): • If a player is going to miss any training or game for any reason, he or she needs to contact the coach as early as possible • All injuries should be reported to the coach and trainers, even if they occur away from school • The training room opens every morning (M-F) at 7:45 • Trainers will make decisions on players’ participation • When possible, please visit with trainers before scheduling doctor’s appointment • A student must be present at school for at least half of the day to participate in an athletic practice or event

Equipment: • GCISD athletic equipment is for training and matches only (not to wear to school or the mall). • GCISD athletic equipment is for the athletes to wear only (not for mom’s, girlfriends, boyfriends, etc.) • Please wash uniforms carefully. Technological fabric needs to be quickly removed from the washer and dryer. Please use “low” or “air” dryer temperatures. • Wash and dry inside out. • Please, please, please take care of the equipment.

  26. The Next Level… • The GHS Soccer program historically helps numerous players move onto the collegiate playing field after graduation at all levels: NJCAA, NAIA, NCAA Div. I, II, and III, NCCAA. • Please consult the NCAA and NAIA websites for eligibility requirements. • www.ncaa.org/wps/portal/ncaahome?WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=/wps/wcm/connect/ncaa/NCAA/Legislation and Governance/Eligibility and Recruiting/ • http://naia.cstv.com/member-services/legislative/currentissues/FreshmenEligibilityRequirements.htm

  27. The High School/Club Dilemma: • Club soccer is in no way mandatory to play high school soccer, but CAN provide great opportunities to develop as a player • Recreational soccer, indoor leagues, Latin American leagues and self training CAN ALSO provide the opportunity to develop as a player • The GHS Soccer coaches will work with club conflicts to aid in our players’ development and help prevent injury, therefore it seems only reasonable and professional that we expect the same consideration from our club counterparts • Player/Parent/Coach communication is paramount • High School Playoffs at the very most happen four times in a player’s career, while “career” club players will conservatively play over 320 club games

  28. Questions and Answers… • If you have any additional questions, please contact your coach. • In addition, to participate in matches, each player and his/her parent/guardian must print and sign the following page

  29. Team Communication • Remind • Varsity text @mrdhammon to 81010 • JV1 text @ghsjv1j to 81010 • JV2 text @ghsjv2s to 81010
