Warm-Up: • We saw on Monday that when current moves through a wire, magnetic field is formed. • What happens when a magnetic field is moved near a wire?
Induced Current • All the current we have seen so far has been produced by a voltage source: • a battery or an outlet • We have also seen that flowing current can produce a magnetic field. • The reverse is also true!
Induced Current • A current is induced when a magnet moves relative to a solenoid. • This is called electromagnetic induction. • Or vice versa.
Induced Current • As the angle between the magnet and solenoid changes, electrons are forced in alternating directions in the wire. • Alternating current! • (more tomorrow)
Induced Current: Rotate Wire • One way to induce current is to rotate a wire in a magnetic field. • This is how most power plants operate.
Induced Current: Move Magnet • The other way to induce current is to move a magnet within a solenoid. • The moving magnet produces the same affect as a moving wire.
