Overview • Problem Identification • Resolution Strategy • Coming to agreement • Building the tool • Chemical Registry System (CRS) Demonstration • Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) Demonstration
Chemical substances and biological organisms are identified and represented inconsistently in Agency data systems. Representations include varying code sets, nomenclatures, and formats. Makes searches based on names very difficult. Hampers information sharing. Problem

Resolution Strategy • Reach agreement on standard representation • Build central reference tool to capture representations
Reaching Agreement • Obtain management recognition of problem • Apply data standards process • Build consensus on solution • Provide implementing instructions
Reaching Agreement–Standards Setting Process • Workgroup participation solicited by CIO • Workgroup open to all interested parties • Regularly scheduled meetings • Workgroup identified information requirements • Management approval received • Implementing instructions underway
The Chemical ID Standard • Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number • CAS Systematic Name • EPA Chemical RegistryName

CRS User Feedback “The CRS should be an extremely valuable tool for all those involved in environmental compliance work. Great job and kudos to the team involved!” North Star Steel/Cargill, Inc. “This looks like a very useful information source.” City of Pittsfield, MA WWTP
Biological Taxonomic Standard • Based on ITIS • Other components: • Standardized terms for groups (minnows, phytoplankton) • Viruses from International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV)
