  3. Windows History • Developed in ~1983-1985 by Microsoft • ‘Interface Manager’ for MS-DOS • Included: • Calculator • Cardfile • Calendar • Clock • Notepad • Etc. • Ran as a “.exe” from DOS prompt 3

  4. Windows History, cot’d. • Windows 95 (August, 1995) • Presented the workspace still recognizable today • 32-bit • Separated DOS and Windows (ran as a primary OS) • Debuted Internet Explorer web browser • Windows 98 (June, 1998) • Improved on Windows 95 with new hardware support 4

Windows History, cot’d. • Windows ME (Sept, 2000) • Considered a flop – lasted a year • Incorporates some features of enterprise class windows OS (Windows 2000) • Windows XP (Oct, 2001) • Based on Windows NT • Largest used Windows OS • 53.1% market share as of Aug. 2010 (http://w3schools.com) • First availability of 64-bit version 5

Windows Role • Home User • Windows is the primary OS of home users throughout the world. • Update experience: • Regular prompted updates • Service Packs • Users access email, web, music, video, everything through Windows. • Portable • Available on laptops, phones, tablets, and media devices. 7

  8. Special Versions • Windows Server • Provides network services: • Web serving • Virtual machine hosting • DNS/DHCP • Domain Services • Media services • File serving • Printer serving • Failover clustering 8
