17-1 The Fossil Record Q: What is the fossil record? A: The fossil record is used to provide evidence about life’s history on earth by showing how organisms have changed over time! JK
Fossil Dating • Relative Dating : This is done by comparing a fossil with fossils in other layers in rock to determine its age. • Radioactive Dating: Scientists calculate a fossils age by finding the amount of remaining radioactive isotopes it contains using the substance’s half-life. JK
Earth’s Early History Q: What did earth’s early atmosphere contain? A: Most likely it contained hydrogen cyanide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, and water. Experiments by scientists Miller and Urey discovered that mixtures of these compounds made organic compounds necessary for life today. JK
The Beginning of Life • Rise of oxygen in the atmosphere evolved some life forms, while others died off. • Endosymbiotic Theory: Eukaryotic cells arose from communities of prokaryotic organisms. CD
Important parts of Earth’s History • According to the fossil record, marine life increased early on in the Paleozoic Era. • Animals began to take over in the Devonian period. • A mass extinction occurred at the end of the Paleozoic era. • Flowering plants appeared in the Mesozoic era. • Mammals adapted a lot in the Cenozoic period, and humans appeared. CD
Important Macro-Evolutionary Patterns • Mass Extinctions • Adaptive Radiation: single species evolving into different forms • Convergent Evolution: unrelated organisms become similar • Coevolution: 2+ species evolve from changes over time in each other • Punctuated Equilibrium: long, stable periods with brief, rapid changes CD
