  2. Dimension 3 - Complex Reasoning Process Classifying Definition Classifying is the process of grouping concepts or things into definable categories on the basis of chosen attributes. Classifying things differently can influence perceptions and behaviour (Marzano & Pickering, 1997). Dimension 4 - Use Knowledge Meaningfully Systems Analysis Definition Systems analysis is the process of analysing the parts of a system and the manner in which they interact (Marzano & Pickering, 1997).

  3. Setting the Scene This science unit is titled the Life cycle of Plants ????? Can we think of a catchy title??? Great Garden Grumble. Grub. Grow, Gruel. ???? The Frangenheim College (situated in Bundaberg Qld) has 20 (twenty) Year 4 (four)learners in the class. They have completed a number of lessons in which they have previously acquired and integrated the following declarative and procedural knowledge.

  4. Declarative Knowledge Students know that . Germination is the beginning of the seed life cycle . Roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruit have a specific purpose in life. . Plants have a reproductive process. . The importance of prediction, reasoning, observation and evaluation of an investigation. . . Plants need different types of energy to grow and survive. . Energy is gained from sun, soil and water. . Plants are important for a healthy environment and for living things.

Procedural Knowledge Strategies 1 to 5 - Classifying Students have had previous experience with the classifying process and they have been exposed to the following classifying strategies for extending and refining their knowledge in a number of previously studied areas. To help students understand the process of classifying they have Students have been provided with a model (see A3 paper on wall??) for helping them in the process of classifying. (P125 DOL). As the students have been studying the process of classifying they have been given the ????????? to help them focus in the critical steps and difficult aspects of classifying. The students have previously had many opportunities to practice classifying using graphic organisers. Some of these include, fish bone, Y charts, concept maps, and tables some of which are displayed here for you. ???? This year 4 class have had a range of teaching methods throughout their schooling as well as part of this unit including teacher – structured and student-structured tasks.

  6. The Placement of the LEP This unit plan has ???? Number of lessons. The unit begins with ?????? Lesson 1 – one line for explanation Lesson 2 – More explanation in the sheet handed to Kerry. This is just an overview for the other students to be able to say they have marked off that we placed the LEP correctly????? Lesson 3 Lesson 4 – The students learn the concept and terms of companion planting gardening Lesson 5 – ROLE PLAY – LEP - Classifying Etc.

  7. Link to Summative Task The summative task for this unit is the creation and sowing of a genuine vegetable and herb garden. The fruits of the garden are to be harvested regularly by the students for use by the school tuckshop. The convenors of the tuckshop have given the students a list of herbs and vegetables they would use and the students have chosen 16 different herbs and vegetables to sow in their garden. Throughout the unit the students learn about Etc etc.
