  1. SWADLINCOTE SHOPMOBILITY Supported by: SOUTH DERBYSHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL & LLOYDS TSB FOUNDATION

  2. SWADLINCOTE SHOPMOBILITY • The present scheme has been based in Swadlincote since 1995, it was established by negotiations between Mr Norman Armal (first chairman of the scheme) Mr Tony Sharpe and officers of the South Derbyshire District Council who recognised that a Shopmobility Scheme would be good for the town which at that time it was in the process of becoming a pedestrianised town centre. • Our first base was at the rear of premises in High Street in Swadlincote. After a number of years it was decided to move to a more prominent place in West Street; sharing office space with the Derbyshire Assn for the Blind. • This year we have moved again to Grove Street, in order to consolidate our role in the town. When the new shopping outlets are settled in the town, we shall be able to supply to the needs of the elderly and disabled who wish to visit our town centre. Supported by: SOUTH DERBYSHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL & LLOYDS TSB FOUNDATION

  3. SWADLINCOTE SHOPMOBILITY • The Scheme provides electric four wheeled scooters and manual wheelchairs for people to shop or pursue their leisure activities in the town, and surrounding area. • Membership is free. • Training is given to those new clients who have not used the equipment previously. • The service we provide is a free service, though donations are accepted. • At present our opening times are 10am – 2pm Monday,Tuesday,Thursday & Friday. • It is advisable for clients to book before coming to us, to ensure that a scooter is available at the time they wish to come into Swadlincote. • We give a friendly, welcoming service to all our clients, in the hope that they will use our service again, and that they will pass on to their friends and families that this facility is available in Swadlincote. Supported by: SOUTH DERBYSHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL & LLOYDS TSB FOUNDATION

  4. SWADLINCOTE SHOPMOBILITY • FUNDING • At present our main funding is provided by the South Derbyshire District Council, and for the last two years extra funding has come from a successful application to the TSB Foundation. These two at present provide the main funds for the Scheme to operate. • Additional funds are raised by the small grants, donations, raffles, bangers and Mash nights, and recently a new idea to provide day trips where people can have a day out, and raise funds for the Scheme at the same time. • We have also provided scooters and manual wheelchairs at the venue of Liberation Day, which has been very useful for us get out and meet the people who may wish to use our services, and also to meet other organisations in the area. Also these last three years we have attended Lullington Open Gardens in order to promote our Scheme to people who live in the villages. Supported by: SOUTH DERBYSHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL & LLOYDS TSB FOUNDATION

  5. SWADLINCOTE SH0PMOBILITY • To provide this valuable service, we rely on volunteers to give up their time in order for this Scheme to run. • We try to instil in them how important it is to be friendly, and have a listening ear. Many of our clients do not see anyone to talk to from one visit to the next, so it is vital that they have the opportunity to interact with people when they do use the service we provide. • It can be during this interaction that any problems/concerns they may have can be highlighted, and we can then possibly advise them where they may be able to get the help/support they may need at that time. • All clients are instructed in the use of mobility scooters/wheelchairs. Supported by: SOUTH DERBYSHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL & LLOYDS TSB FOUNDATION

  6. SWADLINCOTE SHOPMOBILITY • LOAN SCHEME • We also provide a loan service for wheelchairs that people can use after hospital treatment, holidays, and longer periods etc., • This scheme requires a deposit, and it is hoped that the client will leave a donation on return of the wheelchair. • The amount of deposit depends on the length of time the client needs the use of the wheelchair. Example: 1 day £5 Weekend £15 Week £25 Supported by: SOUTH DERBYSHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL & LLOYDS TSB FOUNDATION
