Workshop • Organising an Archery event: • please make an Action Plan for people with disabilities
Idea’s Generation • Keep an open mind • Be creative and daring • Find a champion • Assessment • Identify target group • Understand particular needs (incl. equipment) • Ask those who know • “Walk a Mile in His/Her Shoes”
Remember Peripherals • Transport • Car Parking • Toilets • Storage Space (for equipment) • Catering/eating facilities
Weather • Will bad weather significantly alter terrain? • Is there an alternative? • Mixing Ability • It’s an Event, not a Disabled event • Encourage able-bodied friends
Getting Buy-In • Involvement. “With” not “For”. • Make it Social, not just Physical • Build on existing friendships • Overcoming concerns • Of Participants • Of Parents
Raising Awareness • Targeted advertising and Editorial • Create Database/mailshot • Facebook/Social Networking sites • Manning • Linked to assessment • Enlist Volunteers • Clarify roles & responsibilities
What we have learned about organising accessible Events • Venue research: Get someone with a disability to check the Venue • Different Disability means different ability • Personal Assistance needed? Helping with Archery, transfer, going to toilet etc. • Accessible Toilet facilities?
Special Equipment needed? • How to get people and Equipment to Venue? • Do we need Ramps for Steps? • Risks Assessment
Discussion • What needs to be done for people with disabilities? • C- Consider: What is needed? • O - Offer Help • A - Ask: DON’T Assume • L - Listen • Is there any questions?
Thank you for your Attention! ShopmobilityBelfast would like to Thank CAAN for the opportunity to participate in this workshop!
