Introduction Roof membranes are of different kinds, but if your roofing contractor is insisting on PVC, you should refuse it immediately knowing the following things about PVC.
Risks Associated With PVC? • The chemicals used in its manufacturing can cause severe health problems such as: • Cancer • Neurological Damage • Immune System Damage • Respiratory Problems • Liver and Kidney Failure • Birth Defects • Asthma
What is PVC? • PVC or Polyvinyl Chloride is made from the polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), a toxic, carcinogenic gas. • Although, it’s durable, much economical and very versatile in terms of roof membrane and several other products, the health related risks cannot be ignored. • PVC is also used as a roof membrane to cover flat roofs and appears exactly like TPO membrane.
What Can We Do? • Researchers say that PVC is not a safe material to be used anywhere, including as "roof membranes". • Therefore, clearly refuse the roofing contractor as soon as you hear that PVC is going to be used in a roofing membrane. • Instead, ask them to use TPO that is very identical to PVC, but has lesser risks for the customer. • TPO is flexible and highly energy efficient, along with being non-toxic. • TPO is a younger product; it has only been around since 1991. • Till now, it has been showing indications that it will last longer than the PVC based roof membrane.
