Ancient Greek Spears Helmets & Armor http://picasaweb.google.com/exkhan/AthensNasserOmairSTripPartII#5149652862876204210 Because warfare played such a big part in the lives of Greek citizens, swords, spears and catapults played an important role in their lives. They were always looking for a way to improve warfare and dominate.
Military Service • Military service was a key to wealth and economic status • In times of war, citizens were required to be in the army for two years • They were all considered on call until the age of 60 • They carried bows, javelins, slings, spears and swords • A foot solider was called a hoplite • They had great war skills http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/768/38409.JPG
Greek Spears Ancient spears were known as a dory and were the most popular armament of the hoplites. It could be used in hand combat or thrown. Spears were sharp iron with a wooden shaft and a bronze butt. The spears allowed hoplites to keep their enemies at a distance. http://faq.macedonia.org/images/phalanx.jpg
Swords Swords were used after the spear was completely broken. The first swords were made from copper and bronze until iron was mined. Hand to hand combat consisted of thousands of men carrying slashing, double sided swords. Catapults Catapults were large inventions that improved combat during the siege of a city. They were used to shoot large rocks and arrows great distances. They helped revolutionize ancient warfare. Weapons are a key to success in any war and most of the time they define who will hold the victory. Greeks were well advanced compared to other countries of their times. They were a feared military regime with better weapons and war tactics. The Greeks believed in honor, courage and duty and they were constantly striving to improve upon those beliefs.
