Viruses, Worms and Trojans They’re all bad, how to tell the differences? By Nick
Virus • A virus is a program that can • cause damage to files on computer. • The virus attaches it’s self to a host file (a file that is commonly distributed) which is then opened/run by the user and the virus spreads to other files.
How to tell you have a virus? • Viruses will generally do the following things: • Displays unwanted messages eg. Pop-ups, even when you are not on the internet. • Unusual sound or visual effects. • Loss of data or data corruption. • Computers restarting continuously.
Worms • A worm replicates (like bacteria) it’s self to infect many files and can spread without a host file i.e. a program • Worms are not as dangerous as viruses.
How to tell if you have a worm? • Worms consume bandwidth meaning that the internet connection is slower. • This is a problem for networks as it creates extra network traffic which makes everything. • Worms are generally transferred through emails and through Trojan horses.
Trojan Horse • A program that appears to be normal but contains malicious code inside. • They sometimes contain worms and viruses.
How to delete trojans • There is no single method to delete them but the easiest way is to clear temporary internet files. • They can also be deleted manually.
