Bush August 2008 proposals • Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act aka (Superfund), 1980

  4. Current Policies • RCRA Resources Conservation and Recovery Act, enacted 1976, expanded 1986 • ToSCA Toxic Substances Control Act, enacted 1976 • PPA POLLUTION PREVENTION ACT • Oil Pollution Act • Nuclear Waste Policy Act • Energy Policy Act • Atomic Energy Act AEA

  5. Why did the U.S. not ratify the Kyoto Protocol? • Does not include targets for developing nations • India • China • Unscientific and politically motivated • Danger to U.S. economy

  6. Recommendation • U.S. ratification of Kyoto • Environmental implications • Political implications • Exemption hindrance (especially with China and India) • Economic fear hindrance (how bad would it hurt U.S.?)
