  1. Facilities Planning Team

  2. Purpose of the team • To review current facilities • To determine the effectiveness of the facilities in achieving the mission of the church • To propose ideas for future direction in facilities development • To encourage planning, to anticipate need and expense.

  3. Does our current facility provide for: • Accessibility • Front Door / Entry / Ease of movement • Youth Needs • Dedicated, safe space • Security • Children • Church community • Sanctuary • Gathering space • Multipurpose facility

  4. How is this a worship issue? • As a church body, we need to: • Provide an environment conducive to worship and praise • Provide a safe and secure area for the children so our members and visitors can focus on education, worship and praise • Provide an environment that honors our Lord and Saviour • Care for the church in a way that reflects our commitment to Christ and to the mission of His church. • These are acts of worship

  5. Qualities of a “front door” • It is the primary entrance to the facility. • It should “look” like a front door. • It should lead to immediate human contact. • It should deliver the entrant to a warm, welcoming, “family space.” • Ours currently does not do this well.

  6. For most of us…

  7. Security • Fastest growing dept. • Children • Their area is not secure and safe • No Limited / Authorized access • No Controlled registration / pick-up • Workers cannot detect trouble early • With irregular / uncontrolled thru-traffic

  8. Church Community Space • A place to gather • A place to connect • A place to be at ease • A place to access resources • A central hub for the entire family • A “front door” that works

  9. Our Sanctuary • Built in 1950s • Renovated in 1976 • Ceiling • Augmented in 1990s • Lighting

  10. Our Sanctuary • Affected by time: • Floods • Rains • Decay / wear of materials • Electrical / wiring / structure / seating • Technological generational gap • Meeting Sound / Lighting / Utility needs

  11. A brief tour of concerns:

  23. And, right under your.. Um..

  24. More Issues • Seating • Balcony Chairs need repair • Windows • Cracked windows / Many leaks • Holes at multiple window bases • Doors • Front doors do not seal

  25. More Issues • Ceiling • Falling down above balcony / sound booth • Faux wooden ceiling beams are warping • Walls • Walls / Panelling need many repairs • Baseboards need replacement / repair • Extensive water damage remains • Environment • Temperature difficult to maintain

  26. More Issues • Platform / Stage • Poor functionality – needs redesign • Flood control • Street barrier? Raise floor? Seal walls! • Overhead lighting • Decaying / difficult to access / maintain • Lighting control obsolete / problematic • Baptistry • Leaks when filled

  27. More Issues • Speakers • Up there, in ceiling / Poor placement • Impossible to access safely • Sound delivery / range is hindered • Wiring for sound / microphones • Stage wiring unusable / decayed • “Snake” means more wires to trip over • Electricity • Cannot use outlets at stage level due to hum

  28. More Issues • Projection • Competition with sunlight / projector / lens • Monitors • Screens – awkward and obtrusive • Speakers – insufficient support for music • Access • Lights / Wires • Inability to adjust / update / troubleshoot

  29. Our list of concerns: • Accessibility • Front Door • Youth Needs • Dedicated, safe space • Security • Children • Church community • Sanctuary • Gathering space / Sharing space

  30. Our current thoughts Suggestions • Renovate Sanctuary • Keep the style • Flood-proofing • Secure the children • Rearrange room use • Expand Foyer? • Entry access • Offices • Improved traffic flow • Gathering space • Media access • Centrality

  31. Current 1st Floor Layout

  32. Issues: • Accessibility • Youth Needs • Security • Church community • “Front Door” issues

  33. What’s next? • We still don’t know all the answers! • The FPT still has no set plan • But we are convinced we have the need • We have a large portion of the resources needed • We still think we need professional help • Architect vs Building Consultant • Design options • Cost estimates • Phased objectives as needed

  34. We propose: • We seek out and select a specialist • Architect vs Consultant • We contemplate our needs and desires for sanctuary renovation • We review and edit and come to agreement on renovation design • We discuss cost estimates • We decide on phasing of plan • We continue on as the Lord leadeth…

  35. Thank you
